Tips to Escape When You’re Down, Stuck and Stressed

Almost everyone will experience the feeling of being stuck in a rut. When life becomes too predictable and uneventful, you may become apathetic or depressed. In order to escape a rut, you have to be motivated to change. The following tips will help you break free of your current routine and will encourage you to create a fulfilling life.

Live Consciously
Today’s high-paced world and jam-packed schedulesmake it all too easy to switch your mind to autopilot. The problem with going through your days on autopilot is that you lose the opportunity to experience the unexpected joys in life. When you live consciously, you are mentally present in all of your endeavors. Whenever possible, rearrange your schedule so that you aren’t rushing to meet deadlines or complete tasks. Completely focus on whatever you are doing, and not only will you be more productive, you will become more engaged with life. This will allow you to notice and appreciate all of life’s little pleasures.

Reorganize Your Living Space
Your home is your personal sanctuary, and it should reflect your personality and meet your needs. Your living space is where you motivate yourself in the morning and recharge your batteries after a long day. Because your home environment is so influential on your mood, it should be organized to maximize comfort and pleasure. If you like to curl up with a good book at night, focus on making your living room extra cozy. If you’re an early riser and love to exercise, create a spot in a sunlit area for morning yoga sessions. If cooking is your passion, arrange your kitchen to be the ideal layout for culinary creations. Identify your interests, and incorporate them into your home. Your living space will be transformed into the perfect place for revitalization.

Eat Healthier Foods
Healthy eating is not merely a means to obtaining an enviable figure; it is about getting proper nutrition to fuel your body. Unhealthy eating habits make you feel sluggish and uninspired. By eating healthier, you’ll have increased energy, which will help you become more productive. It may seem hard to change your eating habits, especially if you are always on the go, but it is achievable through making small, positive changes. You don’t have to overhaul your diet overnight, but you should try to incorporate healthier foods over time. Try bringing fruit or vegetables for snacks at work instead of buying vending machine junk food, or replace white rice and pasta with whole wheat varieties. The little changes will add up over time, so even if you decide to indulge in a treat every once in a while, your body will still have the necessary nutritional reserves to keep you feeling energetic.

Exercise
Exercise helps maintain your body, muscles and bones, and it increases your energy level. There is also an often overlooked benefit of exercise, which is the challenge it provides. When you actively work to increase your level of fitness, you are challenging yourself both mentally and physically. If those last few minutes of spinning class can’t stop you, nothing can! By pushing yourself to your limits–and then exceeding them–you are proving to yourself that you are able to overcome obstacles.

Try Something New
You have many roles in life. You may be an employee, a colleague, a husband or wife, a parent, a sibling and a friend. While you may love all of these roles, you must also remember your role as an individual. In order to keep your life interesting and fulfilling, you must push yourself beyond your comfort zone. When you try something new, you are proving to yourself that you are able to change and grow. With every new experience you have, you will begin to recognize and appreciate all of your abilities. You will have more self-confidence, which will allow you to create the life you want.

Incorporating these ideas into your life will help you break out of a rut, but remaining out of the rut is an ongoing process. Once you’ve successfully completed these goals, it’s time to make some new ones!
