7 Everyday Habits that Cause Wrinkles

As you grow older, your skin will start to lose elasticity and wrinkles will appear on your face. Good skin care can help you to reduce wrinkles, but changing a few lifestyle habits can also help you to look younger. Smoking, sunbathing, makeup, and excessive drinking can cause problems for your skin and make you look older than you are.

Smoking & Drinking

Smoking poses many risks to your health. As you smoke, your blood carries less oxygen. This means that the skin doesn’t get the oxygen required to produce collagen and elastin. On top of this, chemicals in the smoke produce an enzyme which breaks down skin cells. Moreover, the constant sucking on a cigarette will cause fine lines around your lips.

Regularly consuming large amounts of alcohol can cause your skin to age faster than normal. When you drink a lot, your skin becomes dehydrated. This can lead to more wrinkles and other skin problems. Moreover, alcohol depletes vitamin A in your body. The skin uses vitamin A to produce collagen and heavy drinking can lead to lower levels of collagen.

Too Much Sun

You might think that a golden-brown tan looks beautiful, but too much sun can lead to wrinkles. Make sure that you wear sunscreen and try to stay out of the sun as much as possible. Wear long clothes and keep your skin covered to protect it from sun damage.

Not Drinking Enough Water

Water keeps your skin hydrated and minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s best to drink water in smaller amounts throughout the day to keep a constant supply of water for your skin.

Sleeping

If you sleep on your stomach or on your side, your face will be continually pushed up against the pillow for many hours. This will cause damage to the skin and can lead to wrinkles.

Moreover, you should try to get enough sleep. When you are sleeping, your body will go into repair mode. Your body uses this time to replace dead skin cells and repair damage.

Diet

Food which is high in sugar can also cause skin problems. An excessive sugar intake can cause advanced glycation end products (AGEs) to form and damage the skin. Moreover, fatty foods will give you an oily complexion which can clog pores and lead to spots and acne. Severe acne can cause scarring on the face which will also damage your skin.

Makeup

If you apply a lot of makeup, you could end up with blocked pores which could damage the skin and break down collagen fibers. Always remove your makeup before you go to bed and wash your skin with a mild cleanser. You should also apply a moisturizer in the evening and use natural remedies such as home-made face masks to exfoliate the skin.

Touching Your Face

Continuously touching your face can also damage your skin. The area around your eyes is very delicate and can easily be damaged. If you are always rubbing your eyes, you could stretch the skin and break down the elastin and collagen. Similarly, if you often sit with you face in your hands, your skin will be stretched upwards. Over time, creases will form and will eventually become permanent wrinkles.

There are things that you could be doing every day which are causing wrinkles to appear. Fortunately, a few lifestyle changes can have a significant impact on your skin and make you look much younger. If you want younger looking skin, then you need to take care of your body, eat well, stop smoking, reduce drinking, get enough sleep, and avoid the sun. Combine this with a good skin care regime and you’ll have a younger looking complexion with fewer fine lines and wrinkles.
